Parents, community members and PTO members have been working hard to make our school more beautiful. There has been some great painting going on inside and outside the building by Mary Rhinelander, Aria McElhenny, our new PTO President Muffy White and Principal Bach. Our grounds clean-up day is happening this coming weekend. Thanks to all who have and are helping to make EGS a more beautiful place to learn!

All of the students at EGS had a chance to learn about some different vegetable plants, composting and planting thanks to the PTO and parent volunteers. The children tasted leaves of plants in an effort to guess which vegetable it was. They looked at books about composting and even got to plant their own vegetable in the school garden. Anyone interested in learning more about gardening can join the garden club on Tuesdays from 2:30-3:30. The children will weed, water and learn about caring for a garden. Please contact Mandy Davis if you are interested or have any questions at mandy.davis@comcast.net

On May 8, students in East Gloucester School's 2nd, 3rd, and 5th grades enjoyed a visit by Boston Symphony Orchestra violinist, Elita Kang. Ms. Kang performed for the students, answered questions about her work with the BSO, and treated several children to a "mini-lesson" on a student violin. This wonderful presentation was sponsored by Rockport's Music Outreach Program.

At the heart of our own health and wellness is the choices that we make. Consumers are barraged everyday with products that are marketed without our personal health or safety in mind. The fourth and fifth graders just finished studying how companies try to convince us to buy their products. Thus, making our children an educated consumer and able to make healthy choices for their bodies. Please enjoy the following small clips of the student's projects.

Gracious Givers
Our school is full of gracious givers! After taking part in a Heifer International Teacher Study Tour to Honduras this summer, it was important to me to share that experience with the students here at East Gloucester. In December, I had an opportunity to meet with classrooms at all grade levels to talk with them about how they can make a difference in the lives of kids all around the world. Our East Gloucester School Community has been raising money to donate to Heifer International since then. During our winter break, students participated in Read to Feed, earning money from sponsors for reading great books. All classrooms also have been collecting quarters in their Peace Tubes. These tubes hold $60 worth of quarters. When students have filled their classroom tube they vote on which animals they would like to purchase for families in need. The following classes have already donated enough to fill their Peace Tubes: Mrs. Parsons, Ms. Filippazzo, Mrs. Davis, Mrs. Kenny, Mrs. Cunningham and Ms. Corey. Many other classes are close to filling their tubes! To date, our compassionate community has raised $2,820.00!! Stay tuned to hear as classes continue to give!
Ms. Corey

10 fourth graders produced this paper (Ivo Allen, Gabriel Bradshaw, Lila Hawks, Lucy Garberg, Danisha Ramirez, Scott Trott, Sam Ciolino, Tyler Mitchell, Marion Healey, Abby Webb). The newspaper is funded by the Gloucester Education Foundation. This is the second issue this year; a third is to be published in early June.
